What is counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy is an opportunity for you to talk about your experiences (thoughts, feelings and behaviours) in a safe and empathic environment without fear of judgement or criticism.  Whether you are currently experiencing difficulties or you want to understand yourself better, speaking to a professional can help make sense of things.

There are times in life when it can be too difficult to talk to those who are closest to you, and counselling works by creating a space in which you experience being heard and understood, and where you can be your authentic self.

Why come to counselling?

People seek counselling for many different reasons.  You may be experiencing challenges or difficulties, or perhaps there has been some major life event which has affected you.  Maybe you are struggling with stress, anxiety or depression and want to understand what you are experiencing and find coping strategies, or make important changes.

Coming to counselling doesn't mean that you are unable to cope with things. If anything, it demonstrates courage in facing real issues that are challenging you, and shows determination to overcome these challenges.

What should I expect?

Agreeing to work together means that we have agreed to meet together at an arranged time, usually for 50-60 minutes and in a safe and comfortable setting. The first session will be introductory in order for you to see whether I am the 'right' therapist for you.

You are in control of how long you wish to stay in therapy and can stop the counselling process at any time that you feel is best. My counselling practice is collaborative. I invite you to discuss your goals for therapy and your expectations. It’s ok if you are not quite sure what that may look like yet and would like to talk it through with me.

Everything discussed is kept strictly confidential. There may be an exception to this if you or someone else was at risk of serious harm or you are breaking the law.
